What I Wore: The final push {Pre-snow storm}

Top: American Eagle/Sweater:Zara/Skirt:Target/Boots:Franco Sarto

Monochromatic Outfit

I did it. I did a no shop February and managed to live! I mean, I am barely alive due to the withdrawals from being able to take a quick stroll through Target for that adorable piece of clothing on clearance. I can finally do that! HALLELUJAH!

What makes me even more happy is that I actually found ways to wear the majority of clothes that I pulled that I never wear. This grey sweater is brand new from Zara but there is just something about it that I don't really care for, however it was free. Free is a magical thing that changes my opinion about almost everything, to a fault.

So....can I now shop, shop, shop? Awesome. I'll race you to Target.   photo Sig-09_zps87ca91c7.png Share

What I Wore: Sigh. Winter.

Women's Neon Top with Sweater

We were greeted last night and this morning with another 5 inches of snow. My worry was confirmed, it wasn't enough to give us another snow day. So now we have to deal with the new snow and the old snow that we haven't gotten rid of. Yay! I was praying all night that we got a freak ice storm but alas, that definitely did not happen.

I was fortunate enough to have an area where there wasn't as much snow. However, the wind is whipping snow back and forth now so everything is once again covered. I just wanted out of the cold so I didn't focus on getting good photos at all, a complete blogging sin.

When I actually have to go to school for 5 days in a row I will die. I am getting entirely too used to having a snow day at least once a week. Lordy will next week be rough if we don't have another foot of snow dropped on us. Oh well, spring break is in 3 weeks!   photo Sig-09_zps87ca91c7.png Share

What I Wore: Okay, it's cool. The snow can leave now.

Dear snow, I truly appreciate that you have given me a lot. In fact, you have give 28,000 students a well-deserved break. For that I thank you. You have given me a snow day today and dumped about another 8 inches. Thank you for ensuring I get a day off to study. I am now done with you.

You ruin hair. You make things slick. In fact, the only thing you are good for is reminding me that Christmas is near. It is February, Christmas is not near. Hence, we are not friends, unless you give me another snow day on Wednesday. Then we can discuss our relationship status.
Sincerely,
Alissa

P.S. The boyfriend asked if I was trying to look like a traffic cone with the neon top. That is the subject of another blog post. Sigh. Men.

What I Wore: SNOW DAY(S)!

I had my first ever snow day this past Thursday. I cannot tell you how amazing timing that was. Last week  was incredibly busy, I was struggling to keep it together and I was not at all prepared for the test that I had on Thursday. When I heard that we didn't have school on Thursday I legitimately jumped up and down yelling.

Then we were bombed with a foot of snow the next morning. I diligently prayed that we would get even more snow and have another snow day. (The last time this happened at KU was in 2008) And then, the sky opened and angels smiled down upon me because WE GOT ANOTHER SNOW DAY! Oh my gosh, once again I did my happy dance.

Women's Loafers
I got so much work done during my two days off. Seriously, it was like a mountain was moved off my back. I was able to complete my homework without feeling stressed and rushed. EEEKKK!!! It was awesome.

And that is the last time you will read me writing positively about having a foot of snow overnight. *Guess what I just read? Yep, we are getting freezing rain and another 5-9 inches of snow. * I'm just going to pretend that news was super great me and I didn't just mentally curse the weather.   photo Sig-09_zps87ca91c7.png Share

What I Wore: Weekend Casual

Elbow Patch Sweater

Necklace: INPink/ Purse: Gift from Paris

Elbow Patch Sweater

Notice the Starbucks cup? It was 17 degrees out when we took these photos. Apparently neither snow, rain or below freezing temperatures will stop me from blogging. Literally on within two days the weather had changed from being 73 to the next day the high being 17. I love Kansas. Just love it.
Elbow Patch Sweater
During this month of no shopping I have really dug into my closet and found pieces that I struggle with styling or just plain flat don't really wear that much. This elbow patch sweater is from a order last year with Dorothy Perkins and I never wear it because I have a hard time making it seem new and exciting every time I wear it. The cold actually forced me to layer and I am pretty happy with the result.

This whole month while not shopping, I have realized just how much I think about shopping. I think about when I have time to shop, where I can shop to save money (ironic), etc. During that time that I normally spend as a "break" from school and do some recreational shopping I have put towards personal projects or just resting. I am so glad that I decided to do this early on in the semester, taking a step back has been so good for me.

The challenge is over in a few days (Yay! Spring clothes!) and I'll have a few more reflections but if you ever feel like you aren't being as productive or need to step back; I really encourage you to take a no shopping challenge. You will be more appreciative of what you have and really be more productive.   photo Sig-09_zps87ca91c7.png Share

What I Wore: As neon as I get+SNOW DAY

First and most important, I HAVE MY FIRST EVER SNOW DAY!!!!!!!!!!!! It's expected to snow 8-12" here today so we got out of school. I cannot tell you what a stress reliever this is for me! These past two weeks have been the WORST and this is perfect.

I got this neon polka dot sweater at XXI Forever (I don't know why some stores are called Forever 21 and some are called XXI Forever) and let me tell you, buying something that involves neon instead of black and white was quite the feat for me. I mean, I finally bought something neon, a whole year after it got super big. Baby steps here people, baby steps.

I might even get extra daring and buy an actual sheer, neon shirt. Gosh, I am living on the edge right now. Next I may even stay up till 3 a.m. on Friday night and drink some alcohol and not do homework Friday night.

I am just so dang wild and crazy everyday in my life these days. I mean, normally I am way more exciting.   photo Sig-09_zps87ca91c7.png Share

The Worst Day at the Gym Ever Ended with me on the Floor

I am not the most *ahem* coordinated person. The fact that I can walk and chew gun is kind of impressive. I am that one that manages to fall up the stairs, I am the one who manages to run into a wall, like that is just my life.

Several years ago when I was still living at home I worked out at my local YMCA. I was running on a treadmill (running is a liberal interpretation of what I was doing) at about 7.8 mph when I got a phone call. I hopped off the treadmill to the side and quickly answered it. I slowed it down while taking the call. (I was afraid of pausing the workout) (Or I may or may not have known that was possible)

After I hung up, I prepared to jump back on the treadmill, like a normal human would do. Just a simple jump back on. Nope. Not for me. I "jumped" back on and APPARENTLY it was slightly faster than my feet thought. You know those commercials with the dufus who falls and does a flip off the treadmill? THAT WAS MEEE! I not only slid and fell off, I somehow did a somersault and slid into the machine behind me. Of course people asked if I was OK and I had to act like doing a somersault off a treadmill and sliding into the machine behind me was what I do every Friday morning. I had an instant throbbing headache but I had to act like life was super good and had to keep running till most people that saw me fall left, which was a freaking, long, freaking time.

I mean, you don't do that? Huh, you're sure strange.   photo Sig-09_zps87ca91c7.png Share

What I Wore: Crimson and Blue + Weekend news

Crimson and Blue outfit

You might think that these photographs were taking during December and I just forgot to post the photos. Nope. Instead, these were taken the day after yesterday's post. Within a few hours after getting all dressed up for our date, it snowed about two inches.

Oh and it's supposed to snow 6 inches this Thursday. Oh joy. I suppose we all have been super lucky so far with having mild weather and it's catching up to us.

Crimson and Blue outfit

This is again a school spirit outfit. I know, I know. I might as well just rename my blog "What to Wear for School Spirit." Sorry about that guys, it's just so hard not to dress in school colors when pretty much everyone in your town is constantly wearing them. Seriously, everyday I can bet you that about 75 percent  of people are wearing either crimson or blue. Also, I am HIGHLY superstitious about wearing my schools colors on gameday so I will always, always wear crimson and blue when we are playing basketball. Screw the rest of the sports.

Weekend News:
Is there anything more annoying for a whole 20 seconds than when your sweater hangs onto your boob and it looks like it is caught? I say no.

I watched Singin' in the Rain on AMC and seriously fell in love with the movie all over again. The costumes are so perfect! Gene Kelley had some of the best pattern mixing, ever!

Studied for 4 tests. Death. Even worse, I had to get over that death to take those 4 tests today. Worse death.

Learned that the average person spends as much time in the bathroom as on vacation. Thank you TicTac commercial for that.

WHOEVER THE FRICK SAID ALGEBRA AND FOREIGN LANGUAGES ARE REQUIRE TO GET A DEGREE NEEDS TO BE HURT.

Tried to figure out how February is the shortest and worst month of the year. Seriously, how it is it possible that it isn't March? Can we just skip the rest of the month?

Sigh. Only 9 more days and I can shop and say it's March!   photo Sig-09_zps87ca91c7.png Share

What to Wear for Valentine's Day: Date Night

What to wear for Valentine's Day

What to wear for Valentine's Day
Top: Forever 21 (old)/Skirt: Target/Tights: Nordstrom/Shoes: BCBG

What to wear for Valentine's Day
I can think of fewer polarizing holidays than Valentine's Day. There are distinct groups of people in my opinion:

Single people who angry and stare at you if you discuss any romantic plans you have. They wish you were dead at the moment.

Married or dating people who are obsessed with it because they want to outdo their friends significant others/mates and are competing.

Those that say the day is a scam and it doesn't mean a dang thing.

The tired of being single and alone and want the day over with.

Those who say that the day is a scam/stupid but sure as heck their date had better wine and dine them.

I fall into the latter category. The boyfriend is super great with spoiling me all year round so I very much do not care about getting anything but it's the thought I care about. That and I care about flowers. I am not ashamed to admit that I am shallow and just like flowers and pink stuff. I mean, hello? Who doesn't like flowers and pink stuff? photo Sig-09_zps87ca91c7.png Share

What to Wear for Valentine's Day: My Favorite Part of Valentine's Day

Dear Daddy,
Ever since I was a little girl I woke up to find a bright and sparkly Valentine's Day card from you on either my desk or on the kitchen table with Mom and my brothers. You always wrote one simple thing on the inside of your card, "I love you." I wondered why you only wrote that and then you told me, "Well, I'm not good at writing in cards so I always look for cards that say what I want to say and then sign it."

What to wear for Valentine's Day

Last year was the first year that I didn't get a Valentine's Day card as I had moved away from home. The boyfriend has done a brilliant job of stepping up to the plate with meaningful cards and flowers. It makes me a little sad to realize I won't be home again to receive a card from my Dad, but I know it's a natural part of growing up. I'm not that little girl anymore.

These BCBG shoes are seriously the best nude shoe ever. I cannot recommend them enough.

So Daddy, I know I didn't always thank you for always having a card or sometimes a box of chocolates for me; please know that I appreciated it more than you realize. It's one of my fondest memories and traditions. I know it's hard for you to see your baby girl go off to college and be in a serious relationship, but you have been there for me every step of the way. I love you.

I wore this whole outfit because the sparkly belt reminded me of all the wonderful cards you gave me and how you always encouraged me to be myself, and pink is as me as you get!

Sincerely,
Your forever little girl.

p.s. Tomorrow is the giveaway so be sure you are following via GFC!

What to Wear for Valentine's Day: Part One, Casual

What to Wear for Valentine's Day

What to Wear for Valentine's Day

I always struggle with what to wear around holidays. I don't want to go over the top normally but something about this years Valentine's Day is making me want to go all out. (Or as I sometimes say to my friends, balls to the wall.)

For the next 3 days I am going to show you 3 different looks for this holiday. Today is casual day and there will be a date night, anti-v-day outfit (for those of you who are single or hate the holiday) and another casual look. As a surprise I am going to be giving away something on Valentine's Day. Be sure to keep your eyes open for that!

What to Wear for Valentine's Day

Anyway, this is actually something that I would wear normally around campus but maybe with jeans to tone down the whole "valentine-y" feel of the outfit. In this case though it makes it completely fun and ridiculous, which is just what I like in an outfit. I will admit that even I nearly gagged when I saw how "valentine-y" it is.   photo Sig-09_zps87ca91c7.png Share

Saying goodbye is never easy

I write this as I prepare to head back to my hometown to say goodbye to my grandfather. I got the call he was in his last few days yesterday. I have always been incredibly lucky that all of my grandparents lived within 20 minutes of me, in fact one lived on the same road as me.

My grandfather wasn't the normal grandpa, he was mean often to the entire family. As he aged I learned to deal with it and accept him for who he is. As an adult I've tried to focus on the positive instead of the negative.

My grandfather gave me a love of big band music. I always remember that when he was in a good mood he would play a record or cassette tape (we finally got him on CD's in 2007) with Duke Ellington, Perry Como or Louis Armstrong (my personal favorite). He had an absolute obsession with Sonata in B, I had originally planned on playing it at my wedding as a surprise for him. Now most likely it will be played in honor of him.

He was an avoid garage sale person, my mother and I very much inherited this love. When I was a child I was a book freak and read 3 a day. At garage sales he would buy me Little House on the Prairie books and always boast about how much of a deal he got on them. I knew even though sometimes he was mean, he meant well.

It's funny and sad. The hurt that you thought you wouldn't forget or be able to get past is suddenly irrelevant when you receive news like this. Suddenly it didn't matter how he treated us, it mattered that I see him one more time and tell him I love him. I just want to hold his frail hand and tell him I love him. Tell him that I haven't and won't forget how he cared about my photography, how he bought books at garage sales for me to read and how he taught me to appreciate big band. I just want him to know he is loved.

I've known we were close to the end for a while but finally it's setting in and the tears have come. My teachers understood and excused me, I will have scheduled blogs next week. I will update you and let you know what happens after next weeks series. I am excited about the Valentine's Day series and the giveaway that's taking place.

As I close this the lyrics of Louis Armstrong's "It's a Wonderful World" come to mind, it's the last song my grandpa and I listened together before I moved to college.

What it's like to have curly hair

Every time I see a commercial for "curly hair" I sit back and wonder what idiots seriously think this is what naturally curly hair is like. I want to hurl something at the screen when I see this.

Everyone says to brush your hair; hair brushes are the freaking enemy and will never be used on my hair unless getting it cut. I do NOT own a brush. Nope, I don't own a single brush or comb. I haven't since I was about 14 and figured out how to take care of my hair.
