Do you ever wonder how many people own the same articles of clothing that you have in your closet? Not just similar pieces but I mean the exact same pieces? I do. Not because I run into people wearing them same things in real life but on the internet I almost always see the same item on three to four people. I’m quite aware that I’m not the only one buying Target dresses so I know that someday I am likely to show up to some place and be wearing the same thing as someone else who obviously has great taste.
Well, that day arrived. I wore the same plaid Target shirt as someone else. Was it on a person my age? No. 15 years older? Nope. 30? Nope. WERE THEY ALIVE WHEN COLOR TV WAS A THING? Incredibly, no. That’s right, a 89 year old woman and I showed up to eat some mouth-watering sliders from the Cozy Inn in Salina, Kansas in the same shirt.
The worst part? It kind of looked even better on her. She had that plaid shirt on lock.
I though that maybe she didn’t notice. Maybe she couldn’t drive herself so that’s why she was with her daughter who was older than my mom. But life doesn’t work like that, she noticed. She smiled at me and looked at my shirt. (Side note: I thought she was looking at my chest and I got super self conscious because anyone who has any sort of boob knows the risks that wearing a button down shirt have.)
She looked at me and smiled, “Hey!”
I smiled back, feeling myself blush. “Hi!”
“Same song, different shirt,” she replied.
“Excuse me?”
She cleared her throat, “SAME SONG, DIFFERENT SHIRT!”
“OH!” – me, now blushing because all of the people around us were now aware that we were clearly wearing the same shirt.
We went back to eating our lunch and like two awkward children who were crushing on each other, snuck glances back and forth to see if the other was looking. Both of us were. Every. Single.Time.
It’s somewhat poetic that we were eating Cozy Inn sliders, fast food (ish) and wearing the same fast fashion shirt.
And that ladies and gentlemen is what it’s like to wear the same shirt as an old lady and she totally calls you out.

I can't recall a time when I see someone wearing the same thing as me on the same day as me. However, my boyfriend and I went to a concert once and we SWORE that he was wear the same flannel shirt as a girl at the concert. It was the most bizarre thing! It wasn't exactly the same as we got up close, but it was very similar. I always wonder about the people who own some of the same pieces as me, and I think it's cool that I'm the only person in the world with *my exact* closet, but that there are people who share the same items. There's a lady in my office with very similar style to me, and we've bought the same dresses a few times. It was hilarious one day when we both turned up in the same Target dress. She promised never to wear hers to work again so it wouldn't happen again, but later that day mine tore at the seams and so she got to wear hers again. Hers is still lasting, I must have just got a bad dress! 🙁

I was really, really hoping for a selfie of the two of you so that I could actually judge who wore it better, but for the record, you wear it quite well. Plaid and leopard are always a couple of my favorite prints to mix up.
I really do feel like so many bloggers all own the same stuff – but I think a big part of that is we see it on each other and then immediately need to buy it.

A bunch of women in my office use Stitch Fix, and surprisingly a bunch of us have "twinsie" tops where we've bought identical printed blouses. I have four shirts with a twin, I believe. I think we were probably all looking for cute, printed blouses with sleeves appropriate for a business casual office. But instead of letting it bother me, it makes me laugh… I must be in good company and have good taste like my coworkers, right?
I guess while high school Aubrey would have been mortified, now I see accidental twinning as a compliment.

You seriously write the best posts ever. Once I almost wore a new top to teach in and decided at the last minute to change. It was a good thing I did because I'm pretty sure one of my students had on that very shirt I almost wore that day. I have tried to stop shopping at Target for the very reason that that's what most of my student wear (when they're not wearing college team gear).
